Amelia Earhart ‘Comes to Life’ in Presentation

sscSeveral Staunton Senior Center members and staff gathered in the conference room to hear from Tamara Funk, who is CEO of LightCastle Technical Consulting in Staunton. Program Director Lori Pullin discovered Tamara through an interview article in the Staunton News Leader several months ago and was able to contact her about providing a program on Amelia Earhart, who she has studied and considers to be her role model.

Tamara initially did not have a program prepared, so she and her husband Dan teamed up to present an excellent history lesson, complete with video clippings of Amelia Earhart taking off on her famous voyages and interviews with her as well. Tamara owns an interesting collection of pictures of Amelia which she shared with the group. She also revealed little known facts such as Amelia’s vanities including covering up her freckles, wearing trousers instead of dresses to cover up her ankles, and fudging about her age on certain documents.

Members and staff alike came away with a deeper appreciation of this amazing woman who, through her daring acts, encouraged and opened the door for women not only in aviation but on many fronts. According to Tamara, millions of dollars are still spent every year trying to find out what really happened to Amelia Earhart.
