On Wednesday at the Seminole Trail Volunteer Fire Department, Dan Eggleston, Albemarle County Fire Rescue Chief, and Mike Rose, Battalion Chief of the Seminole Trail Volunteer Fire Department, will present local citizen Ann Kashatus with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of her quick thinking and bravery during a fire at a family member’s home.
On July 21, Albemarle County Fire Rescue responded to a call for a grill fire on the rear deck of a home in the Dunlora Neighborhood. Kashatus, a retired nurse, ran inside the home and grabbed a fire extinguisher, then ran back to the deck and proceeded to attack the fire.
Her quick thinking and calm under pressure resulted in extinguishing the fire before it spread over the decking and the fire was out before the respondents arrived.
When asked how she knew how to use the extinguisher, Kashatus referenced her nurse training.
“Ms. Kashatus is a hero,” said Captain Michael Pitt, “her quick thinking, courage and previous training prevented the spread of the fire.”
