McAuliffe web ads feature Cuccinelli tax calculator

tax-newVirginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe’s campaign has begun a new series of web ads featuring a new property tax calculator tool, which examines how property taxes in localities across Virginia could increase as a result of Ken Cuccinelli’s tax plan.

The tool allows users to enter their zip code and see the percentage increase and dollar amount their taxes could rise annually because of Ken Cuccinelli’s tax plan. Cuccinelli’s proposal would give a massive tax break to the wealthiest Virginians and corporations, and despite months of pressure, Cuccinelli has offered no specifics on how he would pay for it. As a result, Virginia could lose $1.4 billion in tax revenue annually, and as the Washington Post editorialized, “leaders of some of the state’s largest jurisdictions saw [the] blueprint as a recipe for higher property taxes, which are imposed at the local level.”

“Ken Cuccinelli’s tax gimmick could starve communities across the Commonwealth of revenue they depend on for public safety and education funding,” said McAuliffe spokesperson Josh Schwerin. “Because he has offered no concrete proposals on how he will pay for the $1.4 billion in lost revenue the state would incur as a result of his plan, localities could be forced to raise property taxes and place greater burdens on Virginia’s middle class.”
