Jim Ross: NFL execs “hypocritical” on Michael Sam

Jim Ross took a principled stand on the chatter from unnamed NFL executives who are suggesting that All-American defensive end Michael Sam made a mistake in going public this week that he is gay.

“It is SO hypocritical of how some @NFL types are addressing the Michael Sam matter of him declaring that he is a gay man,” Ross wrote on his blog on Thursday.

Ross is often seen on the sidelines at Oklahoma football games. Sam starred for former OU rival Missouri, where the top NFL prospect was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 11.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss as a senior in 2013.

Unnamed execs quoted in articles in Sports Illustrated in print and online suggested that Sam might not even get drafted because having him in the locker room could be too much of a distraction.

Ross knows a thing or two about locker rooms as the former executive vice president of talent relations in WWE. His view as a talent personnel director is that the anonymous critics are full of it.

“First of all, if Sam can help a team win he will be welcomed by his teammates with open arms … no pun intended. Secondly, for some within the league to judge Sam’s sexual preference after seemingly condoning a litany of off the field issues over the years from multiple players is the proverbial pot calling the kettle black and is ridiculous. Bottom line, if Michael Sam can help a NFL team win there will be no issues,” Ross wrote.
