Circuit Court Clerk Visited East Rockingham Senior Center

ersc-circuit courtChaz Evans-Haywood, Circuit Court Clerk for Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, visited the East Rockingham Senior Center on April 10. Twenty-six members, two volunteers, and three guests (who had read about his visit in the newspaper) were in attendance as he spoke on his official duties (managing 19 full-time employees, issuing marriage licenses, probating wills, administering oaths of office, providing passports, etc.), the technological advances that he has implemented during his 5 1/2 years in office, and the extensive work that he initiated to preserve a vast amount of historical documents that had previously been stored in the basement of the courthouse.

Chaz provided a LOT of humor during his nearly 60-minute talk, but he was also proud to mention some of his campaign promises of being fiscally responsible, attentive to the public, and finding ways to streamline the duties of his staff. It was evident that he takes a great deal of pride in his accomplishments as he pointed out that over five MILLION documents have been scanned by his staff over the past five years.

Using a Powerpoint slide show, he took the audience on a mini tour of the Clerk’s office and showed us examples of several historical documents that have been preserved. It is through his leadership that the Clerk’s office received its first perfect audit in the history of the Clerk’s Office and the 2011 Shenandoah Valley Technology Council’s High Tech Leader Award!

It is hoped that Mr. Evans-Haywood will offer a repeat visit as his schedule allows.
