Brain Injury Connections of the Shenandoah Valley is sponsoring an essay contest open to all 4-H and FFA members in its service area of Augusta, Bath, Highland, Page, Rockbridge, Rockingham, and Shenandoah counties and the cities located within those counties.
This project is supported, in part, through state general funds administered by the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS).
“Farming is one of the most dangerous occupations in America, and brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Therefore, Brain Injury Connections of the Shenandoah Valley is sponsoring an essay contest to raise awareness about brain injury during March, which is National Brain Injury Awareness Month. It is our belief that education equals prevention,” said Tamara Wagester, executive director for Brain Injury Connections of the Shenandoah Valley.
The essay contest will be open to students aged 13-18 as the Senior Category. The Senior Category topic is “Brian Injury Prevention and Safety in Rural Virginia – the role of adaptive technology.” First prize award is $200 and the second prize award is $100.
The essay contest is also open to students ages 9-12 as a Junior Category. The Junior Category topic is “Brain Injury Prevention and Safety in Rural Virginia.” The first prize award is $125, and the second prize is $75.
