#2 UVA hosts Virginia Nike Soccer Classic

uva soccerThe second-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team continues to play at home this weekend, hitting the pitch for a pair of contests in the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic at Klöckner Stadium.

The Cavaliers will play host to Cal Poly on Friday night at 7 p.m. before closing out the event against Delaware at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Richmond will also be participating in the event, facing both Cal Poly and Delaware in neutral site games for both teams at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers and Spiders will not face each other in the event.

Virginia is coming off a solid first outing with an 8-0 victory over UNC-Wilmington this past Sunday. Five different players scored on the afternoon with junior Meghan Cox (Springfield, Va.) tallying her first hat trick to pace the Cavalier offense.  Senior Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) added a goal and three assists in the season-opener against the Seahawks.

Junior goalkeeper Jessie Ferrari (Fairfax, Va.) picked up the win in her second career start. She combined with junior Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) in notching the shutout victory.

The win extended the Cavaliers’ home win streak to 33 consecutive games, the sixth longest in NCAA history. Virginia has outscored opponents 132-to-14 in that stretch and posted 23 shutouts in that time.

Friday’s match against Cal Poly features a Mustang squad that posted a pair of draws in the opening weekend of competition. Cal Poly battled San Francisco and Saint Mary’s.  The lone goal for the Mustangs came off the foot of Megan Abutin in the Saint Mary’s contest.

Sunday’s contest against Delaware comes against a Blue Hen team that posted victories over Loyola and Army.  Natalie Zelenky has three of the four goals scored by Delaware this season with two coming against Loyola and one against Army. The Blue Hens won their opening contests 2-1 and 2-0, respectively.

Gates open one hour prior to kick and single-game tickets are $9 for reserved seats (if available), $7 for adults, and $5 for youth, seniors and faculty/staff in general admission areas. UVa students are admitted free.
