How did WWE keep the end of Undertaker Streak secret?

undertakerThe end of the Undertaker Streak at WrestleMania 30 was such a deep secret that not even referee Chad Patton knew.

Yeah, wow.

This is according to a report from Wrestling Observer Newsletter, which provided interesting insight into how WWE shocked the world with the abrupt end of Undertaker’s WrestleMania winning streak at 21.

Hatton was told that Undertaker was winning the match, and thus was as surprised as anybody when ‘Taker didn’t kick out at two, as he would have assumed, after Brock Lesnar hit his third F-5. The circle of people who knew was limited, according to the report, to the two participants, Vince McMahon, Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, and Paul Heyman.

Also left out of the perimeter of wisdom of what was going on were the agents working the match. Presumably the announce crew of Michael Cole, JBL and Jerry Lawler were also out of the loop, to keep their reactions genuine.

The decision to have Undertaker lose was made March 31, six days before the big event. It has been widely reported that ‘Taker had to be talked into the loss by Vince McMahon, but the Wrestling Observer report has it that ‘Taker, while originally assuming that the script would have him come out on top, agreed with McMahon on the ending.

There does seem to have been an assumption that this was going to be Undertaker’s last WWE match either way, and that McMahon’s thinking on The Streak was that it needed to come to an end based on the assumption that it was the end for Undertaker.
