Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has a yu-u-uge lead on Republican Donald Trump in Virginia, according to a new Roanoke College poll released on Tuesday.
Clinton is at 48 percent in the poll, with Trump at 32 percent, Libertarian Gary Johnson at 8 percent and Green Jill Stein at 3 percent.
In a two-way race, Clinton leads Trump by a 55 percent to 36 percent margin.
The candidates had been tied in a May Roanoke College poll at 38 percent each.
Clinton benefits from an enthusiasm advantage among Democratic voters – who are more interested in the 2016 election than Republicans by a 71 percent to 61 percent margin, and are more likely to care a good deal about who wins, by a 93 percent to 67 percent margin.
About half of Clinton voters (49 percent) say their vote is more of a vote for her than against Trump (38 percent). Trump voters are almost reversed on that count – 49 percent say their vote is more against Clinton, with 35 percent of his supporters saying their vote is more a vote for him.
Clinton has the support of 91 percent of Democrats, up from 78 percent in May, while Trump has basically held steady with Republican voters, at 78 percent, down slightly from the 80 percent support from GOP voters he had in May.
Trump has not been able to overcome his general lack of appeal with the voting public – he’s viewed favorably by just 23 percent of voters, and unfavorably by 63 percent. Clinton is viewed favorably by 39 percent, and unfavorably by 45 percent.
That may explain why Clinton has big leads among independents – by a 43 percent to 25 percent gap – and among self-described moderate voters – by a 57 percent to 22 percent margin.
Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine, a sitting U.S. senator representing Virginia and a former state governor, is viewed favorably by a majority (52 percent) of respondents. Republican VP candidate Mike Pence has a favorable rating of only 24 percent, but 40 percent don’t know enough about him to have an opinion.
