newspaperThe Virginia Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired will be hosting an Open House event in Staunton for community members to learn more about the department and available services for blind or visually impaired individuals.  The event will be held at the Staunton Regional Office, 1076 Jefferson Highway, Staunton, on Thursday from 10 am – 3 pm.

This event will allow attendees the opportunity to visit the new Low Vision Lab and learn about available assistive technology for the vision impaired.  Attendees will also learn about the different DBVI services and have the opportunity to meet and network with other community members dealing with visual impairments.

“A 2012 report from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) found that 20.6 million American adults age 18 and older reported experiencing vision loss and by age 65, one in three Americans has some form of vision-impairing eye disease.  Our agency exists to assist persons of all ages who are blind or visually impaired in seeking an improved quality of life,” says Mike Thelk, Staunton Regional Manager.  “Please join us on October 15th to learn more about the services we offer and the exciting new technologies available to persons who are blind and visually impaired.”

The Virginia Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired is committed to provide quality services to assist Virginians who are blind, deafblind or vision impaired in achieving their maximum level of employment, education, and personal independence. The department provides an array of specialized services to blind and visually impaired Virginians of all ages to assist them in attaining the skills, confidence and positive outlook that are critical to independence.  There are six regional offices throughout the state, including the Staunton office, which covers 16 counties and independent cities of the Shenandoah Valley.
