Area high school seniors and juniors who need a little “fairy godmother” help to attend their high school prom in proper attire, will get it thanks to the year round efforts of a group of volunteers, generous donors, caring stylists, and the management at the Staunton Mall.
The 2013 Cinderella Prom Project – celebrating its tenth year – will open on Saturday, March 30th and continue on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. through May 18th. The project is being held at a larger location in the Staunton Mall at 90 Lee Jackson Highway in Staunton – due to the generosity of its owner and staff. “This year we are very grateful for the donated “move in” services provided by Anita Weaver with Cow Palace Auction, LLC. Their group helped lift and move a truck load of items and fixtures that had been in storage,” said Debbie Shickel a 10-year project veteran.
Teens must have invitations (referrals) from their high school guidance counselors in Staunton, Augusta, Waynesboro, Rockingham or Harrisonburg City high schools to gain entrance to the Cinderella store on Saturdays, March 30 through May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A volunteer helper will assist them with their dress attire selection in size, style, and accessories. The cost? Nothing. It is absolutely FREE! The only requirement is that the teen have a 2013 Cinderella invitation and of course the dress and/or tuxedo must fit and look appropriate.
The project continues to be made possible by gracious donors including: Peggy Huffman of Bridal Impressions, Harrisonburg; Alice with Augusta Cleaners in Waynesboro; Margaret with Staunton Florist; Tom Shields with Shields Storage, Fishersville; and of course project volunteers who give hundreds of hours to create the store and then style dozens of anonymous teens so they can look their best and attend the prom when their family cannot afford the high costs of the evening’s attire and trappings.
New gowns and gently used gowns – especially in sizes larger than 14 are needed, along with tuxedos or dark suits and dress shirts for the boys. Donations for a “gift” appointment from manicurists and hair stylists are needed. Donations can be dropped off to SAW Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Monday-Friday from 10 to 5 p.m. or to the Cinderella Project at the Staunton Mall on Saturday’s.
