UVA women’s soccer earns #2 seed in NCAA Tournament

uva soccerThe UVA women’s soccer team received a No. 2 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament and will open play at home on Friday as it hosts high point. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

“It is always an honor to be selected for the NCAA Tournament,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “A lot of traditional powers are not in this year’s tournament, so we feel fortunate to still be playing this time of year. We are excited to be able to open the tournament at home, where we have had a great record in recent years.”

This season marks the 17th time in the past 21 years that the Cavaliers have hosted NCAA Tournament play at Klöckner Stadium. Overall, Virginia has a 25-11-3 record in home NCAA Tournament games.

Virginia is making its 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and its 27th overall. Only North Carolina and Notre Dame have longer active streaks of tournament appearances. Last year Virginia advanced to its first College Cup in 21 years, falling to eventual champion UCLA in a penalty kick shootout following a 1-1 tie in the semifinals.

Virginia enters the NCAA Tournament with an 18-2 record, with both losses coming to Florida State. The Cavaliers lead the ACC in scoring at 3.25 goals per game and have had 15 different goal scorers this season.

high point received an automatic bid as the champion of the Big South. The Panthers (12-4-4) are making their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance.

Tickets for the game are $9 for reserved seats, $7 for adult general admission and $5 for youth/student/senior citizen general admission. Fans can order tickets for the tournament online at VirginiaSports.com and by phone through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office at 800-542-UVA1 (8821) or 434-924-UVA1 (8821). Tickets are also available at the gate beginning one hour prior to the start of play.

Free public parking will be available in the University Hall lot, the McCue lot and at the Emmet/Ivy Garage. The Virginia women’s basketball team hosts Ohio State at 7 p.m. on Friday, so the John Paul Jones Arena lot and garage is reserved for women’s basketball permit holders.
