Staff Report

Democrats are working hard to add to the voter rolls in Virginia, and their efforts seem to be paying off.

Registrations are up 10 percent this year in a number of Democratic Party-leaning cities and counties in the Old Dominion, according to a report in today’s Washington Post. The analysis showed that registration in Republican-leaning areas is increasing as well, but at a much lower rate.

According to the breakdown, 62 percent of the new voters are younger than 35, and 42 percent are younger than 25.

Overall, 283,695 people have registered to vote in Virginia this year, including 33,175 in the first half of September.

New voters account for 10.5 percent of the electorate in Richmond, 9 percent in Arlington County and Alexandria, and 6 percent in Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties.

The increase in registration in Republican areas is in the area of 3 to 4 percent in localities like Hanover in Central Virginia and in the Shenandoah Valley.
