Most of the heavy snowfall is ending in the Shenandoah Valley leaving one to three feet throughout the Valley region. Virginia Department of Transportation plow crews and contractors continue to plow and treat roadways.
Refreezing is anticipated for all plowed surfaces tonight. Plow drivers continue their 12-hour shifts with their main focus on interstate and primary roadways. Heavy snowfall and blowing snow have made road clearing operations challenging.
VDOT is asking the public to refrain from all travel while plows continue to clear roads throughout the night and on Sunday.
Extra caution should be used on Interstate 64 on Afton Mountain in Augusta and Albemarle counties. Truck traffic is very slow going up the mountain and drivers in lighter weight vehicles need to be aware of very slow moving vehicles in the travel lanes.
Due to full truck stops and to keep tractor trailers from blocking Interstate 81, VDOT closed off-ramps at several exits. On-ramps at all exits are open.
- I-81 exit 323 in the Clear Brook area of Frederick County – northbound and southbound off ramps are closed.
- I-81 exit 291 in Toms Brook area of Shenandoah County – northbound and southbound off ramps are closed.
- I-81 exit 213B in the Greenville area of Augusta County –off ramps are closed. Exit 213 northbound truck traffic can use this exit to park at Riverheads High School.
- I-81 exit 205 in the Raphine area of Rockbridge County – northbound and southbound off ramps are closed.
VDOT crews and contractors are using more than 1,000 pieces of heavy equipment to plow and treat roadways in the Staunton District. They work 12-hour shifts until all state-maintained roads are cleared, which is expected to take several days. VDOT’s goal is to have all roads passable within 48 hours after the end of a storm.
Here are the road conditions as of 5:15 p.m. Saturday:
- Interstate 64 – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.
- Interstate 66 – Moderate conditions in Warren County.
- Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.
- Primary roads – Moderate to severe conditions in Frederick County. Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge, Bath, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Clarke and Warren counties.
- Secondary roads – Severe conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties. Moderate conditions in Highland and Bath counties.
