“Dialogues for Change is the first long term project that took TMI into the international arena and it continues to grow,” says TMI Consulting President Matthew Freeman. “Dialogues for Change 3.0 has been approved, strengthening TMI’s role as a global leader in civic engagement innovation.”
Richmond-based TMI Consulting President Freeman and CEO Tiffany Jana have just returned from Ludwigsburg, Germany, where they’ve been bringing Americans and Germans together to share and learn from each other as they strengthen skills in identifying and addressing issues of public concern for their own communities. They were in Europe wrapping up a custom program called Dialogues for Change that TMI co-created with the German Marshall Fund.
“This trip was the culmination of Dialogues for Change 2.0,” says Freeman. “We’ve been working with participants from Ludwigsburg, Leipzig, and Bottrop in Germany and Baltimore, Flint, and Memphis in the U.S. in a learning lab to experiment with best practices in civic engagement for the benefit of their respective locales.”
“We worked with participants to define and distill everything they learned into a format that GMF can ultimately use to share insights with the world,” says Jana. “Cities explicitly named how they used what they learned about civic engagement and they outlined the results and the details surrounding their experiences. All of this will be available as digital resources on the GMF website.”
“And new cities will be added for 3.0,” adds Jana. “Wouldn’t it be great for Richmond to apply to participate and host some of the programs?”
During this program TMI used several civic engagement tools including its cutting-edge use of keypad polling to gauge audience response. Freeman helped pioneer the use of keypads in this type of civic engagement.
