Poll: Virginia voters say Romney won debate, but still trails Obama

AFP

Barack Obama continues to lead Mitt Romney among Virginia voters, despite the strong impression among voters in the Old Dominion that Romney won last week’s presidential debate.

Obama leads Romney by a 50 percent-47 percent margin, according to a new poll out Sunday night from Public Policy Polling. The lead is down from a five-point gap in Virginia for Obama in a PPP poll released three weeks ago.

Romney’s performance in last week’s debate seems to have helped his image with Virginia voters, who think he won the debate by a 61 percent-28 percent margin, including a 71 percent-17 percent margin among independent voters. Romney has also seen his net favorability rating go up 10 points, with a majority (52 percent) now viewing him favorably.

The bad news for Romney is that his favorability is up most among self-identified Democrats, only 8 percent of whom are saying they will vote for the Republican nominee

More bad news for Romney: While his performance at the debate has pushed the number of Republican voters in the ranks of the “very excited” about the upcoming election up to 70 percent, that number equals the number of Democratic voters who are also “very excited” about the election.
