Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam won first place in Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shields’ FitBit Challenge and was presented a $7,000 award for local Virginia schools at a ceremony today. Elected officials participated in the Anthem Healthy Generations Challenge throughout the 2016 General Assembly Session to raise awareness about childhood obesity. Lt. Gov. Northam walked and ran 711 miles over the 52 days, putting him far ahead of the rest of the pack.
“I’d like to thank Anthem for hosting this fun competition that pushed me and my friends around Capitol Square to step up our exercise routine,” Lt. Gov. Northam said. “Together, we logged nearly 3,000 miles and burned countless calories all for a cause that’s so important. As a community, we should be doing everything we can to encourage our children to lead healthy lives.”
Northam has selected three schools to share the $7,000 grant:
- Nandua Middle School (Onley, Va.)
- Northampton Middle School (Machipongo, Va.)
- Blair Middle School (Norfolk, Va.)
First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe, Speaker Bill Howell, Senator Tommy Norment, Senator Dick Saslaw, Senator Janet Howell and Delegate Chris Jones also participated in the FitBit challenge.
