Chris Graham: I’d eat at Chick-fil-A again

Yep, I said it. I’d eat at Chick-fil-A again, calories and gastrointestinal challenges be damned.

(I’ve always been an eat-first, pop-a-Tums later kind of guy when it comes to potential bloating.)

And really, it won’t take much for that to happen.

Dan Cathy doesn’t need to renounce his comments on gays and lesbians and marriage. He doesn’t have to apologize for anything he said about God’s judgment coming down on those of us who don’t agree with him on his read of biblical principles.

I’m all for him and anybody and everybody believing what they want to believe and saying what they want to say about anything and everything.

Here’s how I go back: Chick-fil-A issues a statement telling us that it won’t give any more money to anti-LGBT groups.

That’s all it will take.

Now, let me be clear. The company has every right to give money to anti-LGBT groups, and if it wants to add to the $5 million that it’s given to such groups since 2003, more power to it.

Same as it’s the right of Arby’s to pull its advertising from the Rush Limbaugh radio show and the Arby’s CEO to give gobs of money to Democrats.

Or any other company or top corporate executive to do what it wants to do with its money or messaging.

I don’t make it a point to research who gives money to what cause. I leave that to the culture warriors on the right and left.

Neither am I advocating that anybody else do what I do or even care what I have to say.

In the current case involving Chick-fil-A, company president Dan Cathy forced the issue for those of us on both sides of the issue with his statements in two recent media interviews.

Again, he’s more than entitled to his opinion; this is America, where we’re all free to have opinions and share them in a free marketplace of ideas.

My issue is the concern that a portion of the dollars that I’ve spent at Chick-fil-A over the years have been used to support efforts to further entrench basic civil and human inequality for a significant portion of our population.

There’s an easy way for Chick-fil-A to address this concern.

I doubt seriously that it will take that step, but if it does, I will upon hearing the news make the drive over and buy 10 of their famous chicken sandwiches.

Unless it’s a Sunday when the news comes out. In which case, I will drive over first thing on Monday.
