On Sunday, the organizers of last year’s deadly white supremacist attack on Charlottesville will attempt a rally in Washington, D.C.’s, Lafayette Park, directly across the street from the White House.
Ahead of the weekend, Black Lives Matter Charlottesville, Showing Up for Racial Justice Charlottesville, Congregate Charlottesville, and UVA Students United have issued the following statement:
“Our lives forever changed the weekend of August 12, 2017. Last year our community came together with fierce love to confront violent white supremacist fascists who terrorized us and murdered one of our own. This year, we continue to come together in Charlottesville to collectively mourn the events of last August 12th and to honor this community’s resilience against white supremacy, long before A12 and after. We send solidarity and love to the anti-racist community members of Washington, DC who will face these same fascists.
“Last year, Heather Heyer’s life was stolen, dozens were injured, hundreds were traumatized, and thousands were terrorized as white supremacists from our city and yours attacked us. This year we support DC community defenders in calling for nothing short of a complete shutdown of the ‘Unite the Right 2’ white supremacist event to provide no platform to the inherent violence of a white supremacist fascist agenda.
We see direct connections among white supremacist fascists rallying this weekend, the Trump administration which has recently emboldened those very white supremacists, and the long legacy of white supremacist terror through settler colonialism, slavery, lynching, segregation, police brutality and mass incarceration. We call on communities across America to rectify the deep history of racism that generates this latest wave of fascist terror.”
