Former VMI catcher Matt Winn was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 14th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He is the first VMI player to be selected by San Francisco and the highest Keydet draft pick since Michael Bowman was chosen in the eighth round by Milwaukee in 2008.
“I am beyond blessed to get the opportunity to play for such a prestigious organization as San Francisco,” stated Winn. “Playing professional baseball has been a dream for me since I was a kid. I would like to thank my parents, first and foremost, for supporting me on the journey to playing professionally. Also, I would like to thank all the coaches who have helped me along the way. I could not have done it without them.”
“Matt has worked extremely hard over the years to put himself in this position to be a draft pick by the Giants,” said VMI head coach Jonathan Hadra. “The privilege to play professional baseball does not just happen to everyone and Matt certainly deserves this, and the rest of the post season accolades he has earned, because of the work and sacrifice he has put in throughout the years. We are so proud of him and excited to follow Matt through this next chapter in his life and career.”
Winn closed out his career with a bang, finishing with 14 home runs in his senior season, tied for the third-most in Keydet history. He was not only a First Team All-SoCon honoree, but became the first VMI player to make an All-American team outright when he was named a Third Team selection by Collegiate Baseball. He is a Johnny Bench Award finalist as well, one of three from which the top catcher in Division I will be chosen later this month.
