Virginia to host NCAA men’s, women’s tennis regionals

virginia tennisFor the seventh-consecutive year, both the Virginia men’s and women’s tennis teams will host NCAA Tournament first and second round play at Snyder Tennis Center. The women’s regional will be Friday-Saturday, May 13-14, while the men’s regional is set for Saturday-Sunday, May 14-15.

In the women’s tournament, the Cavaliers will play Farleigh Dickinson (8-6) in the first round, with LSU (18-11) meeting Columbia (13-8) in the other first round match. The first round winners play the following day for a trip to the NCAA Round of 16, hosted this year by Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla.

In the men’s tournament, Virginia will host Monmouth (11-9) in the first round, while Columbia (17-5) plays Penn State (21-8) in the other first round match in Charlottesville.

The defending-national champion Cavalier men (24-4) are the tournament’s top overall seed, marking the 10th-consecutive year they have been a top-four national seed and the fifth time they will enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed. It marks the 13th consecutive year that Virginia has received a seed and hosted a regional. The Cavaliers are the only team to be a top-eight seed in the tournament in each of the past 13 seasons. Virginia, who has played in four of the last five NCAA finals, has reached the quarterfinals 11-straight seasons, made semifinal appearances in eight of the past nine years and have won the title in 2013 and 2015.

The Cavalier women (16-10) earned a No. 14 overall seed. The Cavaliers, a national seed for the sixth-consecutive year, advanced to the NCAA Round-of-16 least season after a program-best quarterfinal finish in 2014. This season marks the school-record eighth-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance by the Cavaliers.
