    Hokies survive apparent buzzer-beater

Erick Green made an 18-footer with 4.5 seconds left to give Virginia Tech the lead, and an apparent game-winner at the buzzer by Florida State’s Derwin Kitchen was nullified by a lengthy official review, allowing the Hokies to escape with a 52-51 victory in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals Friday night.

#6 seed Tech (21-10) advances to play #2 seed Duke in Saturday’s semifinals – and perhaps more importantly appears to have all but sewn up an at-large berth in next week’s NCAA Tournament. Continue reading “Hokies survive apparent buzzer-beater” »

Learning moment? What, then, was Feb. 5?

“I’ve never been part of anything like this. It feels horrible. I’ve never lost a game like this before in my life.”

“It’s a shock to me. I’m still amazed that we’re sitting here with an L.”

Joe Harris and Jontel Evans – you’re not alone.

Sammy Zeglinski hit a late-shot-clock three with 2:57 to go to give Virginia a 48-39 lead.

“That was the dagger. But it wasn’t,” said a subdued Tony Bennett after his team inexplicably blew a 10-point lead in the final 37 seconds before losing in overtime to Miami 69-62 in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday. UVa. (15-15) entered the tournament on a nine-game losing streak and had lost its leading scorer, second-team All-ACC performer Sylven Landesberg, and senior co-captain Calvin Baker from the roster in the past week.

The Cavs led most of the way after riding a 17-4 run over the final 10 minutes of the first half to a 34-27 halftime lead. Continue reading “UVa. wins ACC Tourney opener” »

    (Another Predetermined) Carolina Victory

I’d forgotten how much I hate, no, make that loathe, the Atlantic Coast Conference until around 2 o’clock this afternoon – right around the time that Tyler Hansbrough wrapped up J.T. Thompson in a bear hug and somehow ended up getting a jump ball called that preserved North Carolina’s asterisked 79-76 win over Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.
