xtremefest.jpgiPods, computer games, and cell phones are just some of the gadgets that technology has given us. Along with these things has also come a steady incline in obesity in both adults and children. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, obesity has increased from 15 percent to 32.9 percent since 1980.

To help make adults and children aware of this growing problem, the Waynesboro Department of Parks and Recreation is featuring XtremeFest’08 for all ages. This is a full day of outdoor activities that includes a 26-foot rock-climbing wall, a BMX stunt show, kayaking, and extreme bungee jumping. This is a free event whose main focus for the past three years has been to get adults and kids involved in the outdoors.

Dwayne Jones, the superintendent of parks and horticulture in Waynesboro, says that this XtremeFest is “another outlet for kids” instead of basketball or soccer.

XtremeFest will take place on May 17 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

If you are interested in helping sponsor the event, you can contact Jones at 540.942.6735 to find out how to get involved.
