Virginia tops Harvard
The No. 9 Virginia women’s lacrosse team extended its winning streak to five games with a 12-6 victory over Harvard on Monday (April 2) at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia finished its regular-season home schedule with a 7-1 record on its home field.
Overall, UVa improved to 9-4, matching its win total from the 2011 season. The Cavaliers are 2-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with one league game remaining at Virginia Tech on Saturday (April 7).
The loss dropped Harvard’s record to 4-6 overall. The Crimson have posted a 1-2 mark in Ivy League play this season.
Senior attacker Josie Owen (Gibson Island, Md.) matched a career-high with six goals for Virginia, while freshman attacker Sloan Warren (Philadelphia, Pa.) dished out a career-high four assists.
Julie Gardner (Severna Park, Md.) had two points on a goal and an assist while Caroline McTiernan (Garden City, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season.
Katie Slater (Kensington, Md.), Anne Thomas (Baltimore, Md.), Ainsley Baker (Corning, N.Y.) and Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) each scored one goal for UVa, while Jess Loizeaux (Mullica Hill, N.J.) tallied an assist.
In goal for Virginia, Kim Kolarik (Riva, Md.) held a seventh Cavalier opponent to single digit goals this season and posted four saves.
Virginia out-shot the Crimson, 19-14, and held a 12-6 advantage in ground balls.
The Cavaliers scored 14 seconds into the contest on Slater’s goal off the opening draw. UVa dominated the first half and held a 6-1 lead at the break.
Harvard went on a 3-0 run late in the second half that made the score 8-5 in favor of the Cavaliers with 10:58 to play.
Virginia responded with a 4-1 run to end the game, including two goals by Owen, to earn the 12-6 win.
UVa improved to 6-0 all-time vs. Harvard.
The Crimson was led by Danielle Tetreault’s two goals and Melanie Baskind’s goal and assist. Harvard goalkeeper Kelly Weis saved seven shots in 60 minutes of action.
