UVA athletics captures 2015 Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Achievement Award

va sports hall of fameThe Virginia Sports Hall of Fame will honor the University of Virginia as the recipient of the 2015 Division I Achievement Award. The Cavaliers have now won the award 11 times in the 20 years of its existence.

Since 1996, the Hall of Fame has presented the Achievement Award to the University (Division I) and College Division institutions (Division II and III) that achieve the highest overall winning percentage in intercollegiate athletics in the Commonwealth.

The University of Virginia won 67 percent of its athletic contests in 2014-15 with an overall record of 266-155-6. Virginia won a school-best three NCAA championships in 2014-15, capturing baseball, men’s soccer and men’s tennis. The Cavaliers women’s soccer squad was an NCAA runner-up. In all, Virginia had 11 teams finish in the nation’s top 20.

Individually, the state was led by Virginia’s junior tennis player Ryan Shane who won the NCAA singles championship. Leah Smith won the NCAA 500 and 1650 freestyle swimming championships, women’s rowing won the NCAA varsity 4 boat of coxswain title and Julia Elbaba won the USTA/ITA Indoor Singles Championship.

Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum President Eddie Webb and Chairman of the Board Joel Rubin will present the award to UVA Director of Athletics Craig Littlepage when the Cavaliers host Boise State on Friday, September 25. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, VA.
