Staunton Parks and Recreation hosted another successful Spring Plant Swap at Montgomery Hall Park’s Administration Building on May 9.
This is where people can bring any plants they do not want any more or any plants they have excess of and trade them for something new. The plants are given a value and voucher is given to use as “kind of play money to get other plants,” says coordinator Matt Sensabaugh.
This event has been around for more than 10 years and has always been a big hit. This year there were about 25 people that came out and participated. It was a mix of returning swappers and new plant lovers that were interested to see what it was all about.
Sensabaugh believes the event is so popular because “it’s a way to get rid of anything extra you don’t want and get something new and different for your yard without putting money into it.” He also describes it as “fun and laid back.”
Staunton used to be the only city that hosted a plant swap, but because of its success, many surrounding areas and garden clubs also host these types of events. You can find out about events like this and others in the Staunton Parks & Recreation brochure.
Sensabaugh’s next event is the City Garden Tour on July 25. The tour will begin at 9 am and conclude at 11 am. The cost is $12, parking is available and transportation for the tour is provided. The registration deadline is July 20.
The tour will consist of going to the different gardens in the area, where Sensabaugh will give information about the gardens, flowers and different challenges that are faced working in an urban environment.
