Matthew Carter is here today because he buckled up.
The Augusta County sheriff’s deputy was responding to an emergency call on Eastside Highway on the afternoon of April 1 when a drunk driver entered his lane of travel and nearly hit his cruiser head-on. Carter was able to maneuver away from a direct head-on collision, but the car was totaled. Carter walked away from the accident with only minor injuries due to his use of a safety belt.
County Sheriff Randy Fisher presented Carter with a Saved by the Belt Award last week. The award is given to recognize people involved in traffic accidents whose injuries are reduced or lives are saved due to the use of safety restraints.
