Local News: Waynesboro City Council meeting agenda, Monday, 10:10 a.m.

Waynesboro City Council will hold a business meeting tonight at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at the Charles T. Yancey Municipal Building at 503 W. Main St.

The agenda for the meeting includes:

Consent Agenda: Any item placed on the consent agenda shall be removed and considered as a separate matter, if so requested by any member of Council, otherwise all items will be voted on with one (1) motion.

– Consider approving the minutes from the November 20-21, 2008 Planning Retreat, the January 21 and February 18, 2009 Work Sessions, and the February 23, 2009 Regular Business Meeting, and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

– Consider a request from the Waynesboro City Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department for amplified music in Constitution Park, and to close the parking lot at the corner of Arch Avenue and Main Street, on Saturday, May 2, 2009 from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm for the Waynesboro Public Safety Day.

– Consider a request to refund $421.95 and $393.75 plus interest to two businesses for personal property taxes paid in error.

– Second consideration/adoption of an ordinance re-appropriating $574,203 of FY07 unspent funds held in the ACSA Joint Landfill Fund to the City’s Landfill Post-Closure Fund for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2009.

– Second consideration/adoption of an ordinance re-appropriating $250,000 of FY08 Correction and Detention Funds to the General Fund for the creation of a General Fund Debt Service Reserve for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2009.

– Second consideration/adoption of an ordinance appropriating a Title VI Grant in the amount of $74,930 to the District Wide and Elementary Central Office Funds for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2009.

– Second consideration/adoption of an ordinance appropriating $4,601.00 of unspent Fiscal Year 2008 Asset Forfeiture Revenue that had reverted to the General Fund Unreserved Fund Balance to a designated reserve for the Commonwealth’s Attorney for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2009.

– Second consideration/adoption of an ordinance appropriating a Perkins Grant in the amount of $2,678 to the Secondary Central Office Fund for Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2009.

– Second consideration/adoption of an ordinance appropriating $460 in DMV Family Friendly Funds from Fiscal Year 2008 and Fiscal Year 2009 to the General Fund for expenses related to a contribution to the Augusta County SPCA for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2009.

Regular Agenda

– Consider adopting a proclamation naming March as American Red Cross Month in the City of Waynesboro, and present the proclamation to the Outreach Coordinator.

– Planning Matters: Hold a public hearing to receive public comments regarding a request to close and vacate a portion of Georgia Avenue, between blocks H & F (1501 Allison Avenue), Tax Map 17-3-H-1 and 17-3-F-11, to allow the neighboring property owner to add that portion to their property, and consider introducing an ordinance.

– Presentation by Dr. James Perkins, President of Blue Ridge Community College, regarding an update on college activities.

– Consider a request from the Office of Tourism and Anthony Bilotta, Omnium Bicycle Race Promoter, to close portions of Wayne Avenue, 11th Street, and Main Street on Sunday, April 26, 2009 and August 16, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. for the purpose of holding the Omnium Bicycle Race.

– Consider setting a public hearing for April 13, 2009 to receive public comment on a proposed amendment to City Code Section 26-8 “Cemeteries.”

– Consider introducing an ordinance appropriating a $2,200 donation received by Parks and Recreation to the General Fund for expenses related to the rental of space at the Rosenwald Community Center by the City of Waynesboro Office on Youth for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2009.

– Boards and Commissions.

– Citizen Comment Period.

– Communication, Correspondence and Calendar.

 

Local News: SCORE seminar this week, Monday, 10:10 a.m.

Shenandoah Valley SCORE will be hosting a workshop on Thursday for people in small business or thinking about starting a small business.

The 6-8:30 p.m. workshop will review the steps to starting a business and the components of small-business planning, including financial projections.

The cost of the seminar is $25.

Local News: VDOT road work schedule, Monday, 10:10 a.m.

Here is an updated list of highway work projects that might affect traffic in the Staunton Transportation District during the coming weeks. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

 

Rockbridge County

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 0 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Delineator repair. Shoulder closed, Tuesday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Monday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Various roads – Ditch cleaning, Tuesday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Various roads – Litter removal. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 174 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal. Monday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Mile marker 195, eastbound and westbound – Roadway lighting construction. Shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, flagger traffic control.

* Various roads – Ditch cleaning, Tuesday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
