The Virginia ham in the possession of Gov. Tim Kaine had seemed quite secure.
Virginia Tech had been a four-point favorite heading into their Orange Bowl matchup with Kansas, and the sentiment around the football world was the oddsmakers were giving the Jayhawks too much credit.
But there’s a reason that they play the games on the field …
“The Hokies played their hearts out, but unfortunately they ran into a very talented, very hungry Jayhawk team,” Gov. Kaine said today in announcing that he was honoring his bet with Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and had a Virginia ham on the way to the Kansas governor’s mansion.

Kaine and Sebelius had made the wager on Dec. 27 – with Kaine putting up a Virginia ham, and Sebelius proffering an assortment of Kansas beef.
KU won the game 24-21 on Jan. 3.
“Gov. Sebelius now wins twice. First Kansas won the Orange Bowl, and now she gets a delicious, world-famous Virginia ham as part of the deal,” Kaine said.
“We are still tremendously proud of our ACC champion Hokies and hope for a rematch in the near future,” Kaine said.
Sebelius will receive a ham from R.M Felts Packaging labeled with a Virginia’s Finest trademark.
