Local News: Left eastbound I-64 lane on Afton Mountain to close for cleanup, posted Monday, 2:45 p.m.

The left eastbound lane on Interstate 64 on Afton Mountain at mile marker 99 will be closed today beginning at 3 p.m. to allow clean-up operations from a tractor trailer accident that occurred earlier this morning.

The flat-bed truck is overturned and has cargo containing crates with steel gears spread throughout the area. Virginia Department of Transportation officials do not know how long it will take to remove the truck, cargo and debris from the area.

Local News: I-64 clear after early-morning accident on Afton Mountain, posted Monday, 9:15 a.m.

All lanes are open on Interstate 64 at Afton Mountain at mile marker 99. All lanes had been closed earlier this morning due to a tractor-trailer accident in the westbound lanes that spread debris across the roadway near milepost 99 at the mountain’s summit.

 

Event: MHA-A golf tournament on tap, posted Monday, 9:15 a.m.

The 14th annual Pete Giesen Golf Tournament benefiting Mental Health America of Augusta is on tap for May 29 at the Staunton Country Club.

Teams representing local businesses and organizations participate in the 18-hole tourney and compete for awards including getaway vacations in Bonita Springs, Fla. – donated by the retired delegate and his wife, Pat – and at the Holiday Inn Golf and Conference Center in Staunton.

Local teams are encouraged to register with individuals. The preregistration deadline for entries is May 21. Applications are available at local libraries, the Greenville Avenue Exxon, and the Country Club golf shops.

For tickets or more information, prospective participants may call the MHA-A at 540.949.0169 or 540.886.7181, or e-mail to [email protected].

The entry fee is $100 per person for a four-person team, captain’s choice. Local business teams may compete for the Golf Corporate Trophy for an extra $15 per person. The fee includes a buffet dinner, awards and eligibility for door prizes. All proceeds from the event go to the MHA-A, a United Way partner. Thrivent for Lutherans, Natural Bridge Chapter, is helping with the event.
