wlogo2Thomas Woodfrey went five innings to get his first win of the season as the Waynesboro Generals defeated the Staunton Braves, 8-2, on Sunday.

Before a season-best crowd of 572 fans, Woodfrey (freshman, Miami) gave up two runs on seven hits before handing the ball over to the bullpen. David Spinosa (sophomore, Columbia) and Terrance Dedrick (junior, Auburn) each put up two scoreless innings of relief out of the pen to close things out.

Tyler Bocock (sophomore, Stetson) went 4-for-5 at the plate to pace Waynesboro’s 13-hit offensive attack. Brian Beard (freshman, Old Dominion) had three hits, and Quinn Griffith (junior, Salisbury) and Thomas Stallings (sophomore, VMI) each had two RBI for the Generals.

Staunton had a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when the Generals erupted for four runs to take control. Corbin Lucas (sophomore, Shenandoah) got the rally started with one out when he reached base on an error. Griffith walked, and Roger Gonzalez (freshman, Miami) followed with an infield single that turned into a run when Staunton pitcher Cody Beck threw the ball away trying to get Gonzalez at first. Stallings followed with an RBI single to score Griffith, and JoJo Woods followed up with another RBI single that scored Gonzalez to make it 3-1 Waynesboro. An RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Julius Gaines (sophomore, Florida International) made it 4-1 Waynesboro.

After Staunton scored a run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2, Waynesboro responded with a three-spot. Beard got things going with a one-out single. Lucas walked, and Griffith followed with a two-run double that made it 6-2 Waynesboro. An error on a ground ball by Stallings allowed Griffith to score and make it 7-2 Waynesboro.

The Generals added an insurance run in the sixth on a Lucas sacrifice fly that scored Bocock from third.

Waynesboro continues its four-game homestand on Monday at 7 p.m. against the Harrisonburg Turks. Kris Neal and Chris Graham will bring you the action with a pregame show starting at 6:55 p.m. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
