augusta free press news pays homage to Ring of Honor influence ran a feature this week on Ring of Honor and the influence of ROH on the WWE product.

The story began with a vignette from a Ring of Honor card in 2005 that featured a Daniel Bryan-Jamie Noble match in a small rec center in Suffolk County, N.Y.

ROH has also spawned Antonio Cesaro, The Shield’s Seth Rollins and Colt Cobana, who for some reason never caught on in WWE.

The feature included an interview with ROH co-founder Gabe Sapolsky, who had worked with ECW and credits Paul Heyman as a mentor, but stressed in the interview that ROH was “its own thing.”

“But it did take the spot of ECW in the mid-2000s insofar as it became the darling of the Internet and the darling of the diehard fans,” Sapolsky said. “It took the spot of being the next ‘in’ thing and the underground promotion where wrestlers could really perform their art. The goal was to showcase the best talent in the world and let them grow as performers.”
