Women’s Lacrosse: Big second half lifts No. 5 Virginia to 12-9 win over No. 10 Loyola

UVA women’s lacrosseThe No. 5 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (7-2) outscored No. 10 Loyola (3-3) 8-2 in the second half to comeback for the 12-9 win on Wednesday night at Klöckner Stadium.

UVA finished the game on a 6-0 run, with senior Avery Shoemaker (Wyndmoor, Pa.) and junior Sammy Mueller (Pelham, N.Y.) each scoring two goals in that span. The Cavaliers held the Greyhounds without a goal for the final 21:55 of the game.

Mueller led Virginia with four goals, while Shoemaker finished with three for another hat trick. Senior Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) had two goals with one assist and a team-high seven draw controls. Freshman Lillie Kloak (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored two goals and junior Nora Bowen (Lovettsville, Va.) had one goal.

Virginia had the edge in draw controls (13-10), shots (27-23), caused turnovers (10-5) and free position goals (4-0). UVA also had just 11 turnovers to 16 for Loyola. Three players finished with two goals for the Greyhounds.

Virginia was on the board first with a goal by Bowen, but Loyola scored the next five goals to take a 5-1 lead with 11:00 to go in the first. UVA cut the lead to two twice, but Loyola took a 7-4 lead into halftime. Loyola jumped on the board first in the second half, but Virginia responded with back-to-back goals by Jackson and Shoemaker. Loyola scored its final goal of the game at 21:55 in the second half. Virginia closed the game on a 6-0 run to take the win.
