wrightmonica.gifThe life of a sportswriter …

I had a 9 p.m. Sunday deadline to get my ACC women’s basketball postseason honors ballot back to the appropriate people for counting purposes.

I wanted to catch a game or two Sunday afternoon before turning it in, and I did get to watch parts of a couple of games and then get some highlights afterward.

I wasn’t feeling good all day, as it turned out. And since that point in time, it’s become known to me that I’ve contracted the flu virus that has had half the country down for the count the past few weeks.

You can sense what I’m about to say here, can’t you?

Yeah, I missed the deadline.

But that’s not the worst part. I wrote on Friday the direction in which I was leaning for my first team – Maryland point guard Kristi Toliver and Terps forward Crystal Langhorne, N.C. State center Khadijah Whittington and a pair of in-state players, Virginia Tech’s Brittany Cook and UVa.’s Monica Wright.

My heart sank when I got the e-mail yesterday announcing the results of the voting.

Toliver, Langhorne and Whittington were solid first-teamers. Cook was entrenched on the second team.

But Wright – I’m sorry, Monica.

Wright received nine first-place votes – mine would have been her 10th. And she picked up 95 total points in the voting – with three points awarded for a first-place vote, two points awarded for a second-place vote, and one point for a third.

UNC’s LaToya Pringle was the fifth member of the first team with 97 total points.

My first-place vote for Monica Wright would have put her on the first team with 98 points.

This hasn’t helped me get over the flu, incidentally. Because I feel lower than low right about now.

If I’d been diligent about getting my ballot in earlier than Sunday, for example, or if I’d just bucked up and gone to the computer in spite of the onslaught that the bug was throwing at me …

These are pitiful excuses, I know.

Again, Monica, I’m so, so sorry.
