Democrat Barack Obama holds a five-point lead over Republican Mitt Romney in Virginia, according to a poll released by Public Policy Polling late Sunday.
Obama was at 51 percent in the poll, and Romney was at 46 percent. The difference is the same as what PPP had measured in an August poll in Virginia that had Obama ahead of Romney by a 50 percent-45 percent margin.
A key for Obama in Virginia: Democratic voters in the Old Dominion are more energized about the election than Republicans, bucking the conventional wisdom about the 2012 race. According to the PPP numbers, 73 percent of Democrats say they’re “very excited” about voting this fall compared to 63 percent of GOP voters.
Obama also has a slight advantage over Romney (49 percent-47 percent) in terms of who voters trust more on the economy and a wider (51 percent-45 percent) edge over Romney on foreign policy.
The Virgil Goode factor, meanwhile, seems to already be fading as a worry for the Romney camp. The former Fifth District congressman-turned-Constitution Party presidential candidate is pulling just 1 percent of the vote in Virginia
