bear creek 2019 ACC Tournament#12 seed Miami battled back briefly in the second half, but #5 seed Virginia Tech broke things open with a 20-5 run, in a 71-56 win on Wednesday in the second round of the 2019 ACC Tournament.

The Hokies (24-7) advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday to face #4 seed Florida State (25-6).

FSU defeated Tech 73-64 in OT in Tallahassee last week in a game that was to decide the tournament’s fourth seed.

Virginia Tech played again without starting point guard Justin Robinson, who has now missed 11 games, since going down with an injury in a win at Miami on Jan. 30.

Tech also defeated Miami last week in Blacksburg, and opened the third game in the season series on a 16-3 run in the opening 6:15.

It was 38-21 Hokies at the half, but Miami made things interesting, coming out of the locker room on a 14-4 run over the opening 5:06, to cut the deficit to 42-35.

Miami had the ball, down seven, and three shots on a possession moments later, but could not convert, and Virginia Tech responded with a 20-5 run over the next 6:34 to go up by a commanding 62-40 margin toward the eight-minute mark left to go.

The Hokies shot 50 percent from the floor (27-of-54) and 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) from three-point range for the game.

Kerry Blackshear led four Hokies in double digits in scoring with 19 points, and also snared 10 rebounds.

Chris Lykes led Miami (14-18) with 19 points.
