uva logoVirginia junior tight end Jake McGee has been named to the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List, an honor given to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. The John Mackey Award, presented since 2000, is named for NFL Hall of Famer who helped create the tight end position into a pass-catching threat on the gridiron. Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFL Players Association.

McGee (Richmond, Va.) was an All-ACC performer in 2012 with 28 receptions for 374 yards and five touchdowns. The five touchdowns were the fifth-most all-time by a UVa tight end in a season. McGee grabbed game-winning touchdown scores in the closing minutes against Penn State (1:28) and Miami (0:06).

UVa has a history with the Mackey Award as Virginia alum and two-time Super Bowl Champion Heath Miller (Steelers) won the award in 2004 as a Cavalier.

McGee joins Eric Ebron (North Carolina), Nick O’Leary (Florida State), Beckett Wales (Syracuse), Clive Walford (Miami) and Asa Watson (NC State) as representatives from the ACC on the watch list.

The John Mackey Award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2013 John Mackey recipient will be presented live on December 12, 2013 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show at 6 p.m. ET on ESPNU. Other key dates include the announcement of the 2013 Mackey Midseason Watch List onOctober 14, 2013, the 2013 Mackey Semifinalists on November 18, 2013 and the 2013 Mackey Finalists on November 25, 2013.
