Georgia Tech rocks #17 UVa.

The No. 17 Virginia baseball team lost 17-5 to No. 8 seed Georgia Tech Friday afternoon at the ACC Baseball Championship at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C.

The game was halted in the seventh inning because of the tournament’s 10-run mercy rule. The No. 4 seed in the tournament, Virginia (37-17-1) is now 1-1 in pool play.

UVa concludes pool play at 3 p.m. Saturday when it takes on top-seeded Florida State.

Colin Harrington (R-So., Johnstown, Pa.) tied a career high with three hits for the Cavaliers, while Derek Fisher (Fr., Rexmont, Pa.) and Branden Cogswell (Fr., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) each added a pair of hits. The Stakes: An NCAA bid for Tech baseball?

It’s possible, but there’s a big if facing the Virginia Tech baseball program this weekend, in the form of a three-game series at North Carolina.

If … Virginia Tech (34-18, 11-16 ACC) can steal a series win in Chapel Hill, not only are the Hokies golden for a spot in next week’s ACC Tournament, but they might just be in line to punch a ticket to the NCAAs.

The other side of the if … if UNC (39-13, 19-8 ACC) holds serve and sweeps Tech, the Hokies might face the prospect of not even making the ACC Tournament, which would deal a body blow to the squad’s hopes of playing in the NCAA Tourney. Read more

Georgia Tech rallies, knocks off #21 UVa. in finale

Zane Evans hit a solo home run in the 10th inning as Georgia Tech avoided a series sweep in a 5-4 win over the No. 21 Virginia baseball team Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Davenport Field.

Despite seeing its 10-game winning streak come to a halt, Virginia (34-15-1, 16-11 ACC) took two of three games in the series for its third-consecutive ACC series win. Read more

#21 UVa. makes it two in a row against Georgia Tech

The No. 21 Virginia baseball team won its 10th-consecutive game Saturday, downing Georgia Tech, 4-2, at Davenport Field. Virginia (34-14-1, 16-10 ACC) won its seventh-straight ACC contest and clinched its third-consecutive ACC series victory.

Pitching ruled the day on both sides, with each team finishing with just six hits. Virginia’s bullpen tossed five scoreless innings and ran its ACC scoreless innings streak to 37.2 straight innings. Read more

#21 Cavs dig long ball, nip Jackets

Brandon Downes (Fr., South Plainfield, N.J.) singled home Jared King (R-Jr., Radford, Va.) with one out in the eighth inning to lift the No. 21 Virginia baseball team to a 6-5 win over Georgia Tech Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Davenport Field. Virginia (33-14-1, 15-10 ACC) notched its ninth-consecutive win, including its sixth straight in ACC play, and in doing so clinched a berth in the 2012 ACC Baseball Championship, slated for May 23-27 in Greensboro, N.C.

Half of Virginia’s eight hits came via home runs. The Cavaliers’ four home runs were most by a Virginia team since May 1, 2010, when UVa hit four at Duke, and it was the most home runs by the Cavaliers at Davenport Field since March 3, 2002, when UVa hit four against Seton Hall. Read more

Scott voted first-team All-ACC

Virginia senior forward Mike Scott (Chesapeake, Va.) is a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection for the 2011-12 season and UVa junior guard Jontel Evans (Hampton, Va.) is a member of the ACC’s All-Defensive Team.

Members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA) selected the teams that were announced on Monday (March 5).

Scott, who finished second in the balloting, is the first Virginia player to earn first-team All-ACC honors since Sean Singletary in 2008.  Read more
