Jacob Heiston scored two second-half goals Wednesday evening, including the game winner in the 85th minute, to help lift the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 3-2 victory over rival Eastern Mennonite.
The victory was the second straight in the rivalry matchup for the Eagles and their fourth victory in the past five games against EMU.
Bridgewater is now 4-1-2 overall this season while the Royals dropped to 5-2-2. Due to the unbalanced schedule being played in the ODAC this season, Wednesday’s contest does not count in the conference standings.
The Eagles jumped on the hosts early with a goal in the first two minutes. Freshman midfielder Thomas White slipped past a defender and his shot from just inisde the box beat the keeper for a quick 1-0 Eagles lead.
EMU tied the score in the 31st minute when Dave Drafton sent a ball from the right side into the box and Juan Luna scored from straight away to tie the score at one goal apiece.
Bridgewater regianed the lead in the 60th minute when Heiston pushed forward from the back line up the left sideline. Hesiton juked a defender to work free for a shot and his attempt from 25 yards to the far post found the back of the net, giving Bridgewater a 2-1 advantage.
The Eagles maintained the lead until just under 10 minutes left to play. Drafton worked along the right end line and rolled a ball into the box where Dylan Polley tapped it in for the tying goal.
Three minutes later the Eagles were awarded a free kick and Heiston’s shot from 25 yards went over the keeper’s hands for the deciding goal.
The Royals held a 16-10 edge in total shots, but the Eagles posted a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were even at three each.
Bridgewater keeper Mark Davis finished with two saves while EMU keeper Matthew Overacker recorded three saves.
Bridgewater returns to action Saturday when the Eagles travel to Ashland, Va., to open conference play against Randolph-Macon.
