As part of the 100th anniversary of World War I and the 75th anniversary of World War II, the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and the Veterans of Foreign Wars District 11 are co-sponsoring the Profiles of Honor Mobile Tour on Saturday, September 8, from 10-3 at the Gypsy Hill Park gym in Staunton.
The mobile tour brings an interactive exhibit that highlights the stories of Virginians who served in these wars. As part of the tour, visitors are encouraged to bring their own WWI and WWII related photographs, documents, and memorabilia which can be scanned for inclusion in the Virginia Profiles of Honor Project, which will preserve the stories of our veterans for generations to come. “The Profiles of Honor Tour honors the Virginians who fought for our freedom and helps to ensure that their legacy remains for new generations as World War I and World War II slip further away from public memory” said Delegate M. Kirkland Cox, who serves as the Chairman of the Virginia World War I and World War II Commemorations Commission. “Both wars were fought not only overseas, but from the shipyards, factories, military bases, and homes of Virginians. The Profiles of Honor Tour revitalizes that history, from the home front to the frontlines.”
In addition to the Profiles of Honor Mobile Tour, there will be restored vintage military vehicles to represent recent military conflicts of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. There will be additional displays and exhibits including an interactive WWI exhibit hosted by the WWPL. Children’s games and face painting will also be available in the gym. Food trucks will be onsite and a DJ and music will add to the festivities.
The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum is located at 20 N. Coalter Street in Staunton and includes Wilson’s birthplace, a museum, gardens, and a library and archive.
