Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library plans Presidents Day festivities

Chris Graham

woodrow wilsonCelebrate this Presidents Day at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum Monday, February 15 from 12- 1 pm as Museum Curator Andrew Phillips examines the United Sates entry into World War I.

Why did it take so long for the United States to enter the war?  Was Woodrow Wilson a pacifist?  Join Andrew in the Education Parlor of the Dolores Lescure Center to learn the answers to these and other question and travel the thorny road that was American neutrality.  The presentation is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served.

In addition, the Presidential Library is pleased to offer free admission to children and students accompanied by an adult this Presidents’ Day, Monday, February 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Guests will receive a guided tour of Wilson’s birthplace, the Presbyterian Manse, the home provided by the church for the Reverend Joseph Ruggles Wilson and his family.  Interpreters will take you back to 1856 when Wilson was born and discuss his family, upbringing, and the lifestyle of the period.  Tours are 35 minutes.

Visitors may then continue with a self-guided tour of the museum and explore President Wilson’s life through a series of galleries.  The museum also features the President’s original 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine and a recreated World War I trench complete with lights and sound.  Guests may also enjoy walking through the gardens behind the Manse that were designed by Charles Gillette, and visit the President’s Shop for unique gifts.

The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library is open daily March 1 through December 31 and Thursday through Monday in January and February for visitors from around the world.  The Presidential Library also sponsors educational programming for thousands of schoolchildren each year and hosts a variety of other educational symposia and boasts a large collection of Wilson and Wilson-era documents.

Anyone interested in more information about the Presidents’ Day events should contact Bob Robinson at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum at (540) 885-0897, ext. 102, or [email protected].
