Facilities in the Shenandoah National Park will begin closing at the end of October.
Visitor centers will be operated as follows: Dickey Ridge and Harry F. Byrd Visitor Centers will both remain open until Nov. 30. Loft Mountain Information Center which is open on weekends only will close on Oct. 26.
Campgrounds will operate on the following schedule: Mathews Arm and Loft Mountain Campgrounds will close on Oct. 26. Lewis Mountain Campground will close on November 2. Big Meadows Campground will remain open until Nov. 30.
Concessioner-operated restaurants, lodges and associated facilities will operate as follows: Loft Mountain Campstore and Loft Mountain Showers/Laundry will close on Oct. 26. Elkwallow Wayside, Big
Meadows Lodge, Lewis Mountain Cabins, and Lewis Mountain Campstore will close on Nov. 2. Loft Mountain Wayside will close on November 9. Skyland Resort, Big Meadows Wayside, and Big Meadows Showers/Laundry remain open until Nov. 30.
This winter the following picnic grounds will remain open year round, weather permitting: Elkwallow, Pinnacles, South River and Dundo Picnic Grounds. Lewis Mountain Picnic Grounds will close on Nov. 2. The Dickey Ridge and Big Meadows Picnic Grounds will close on Nov. 30. Loft Mountain Picnic Grounds remains closed.
Portions of the Skyline Drive, which traverses through Shenandoah National Park, will be closed at night during hunting season. From Nov. 10, 2008, through Jan. 3, 2009, the Skyline Drive between Front Royal (Mile 0 at U.S. 340) and Thornton Gap (Mile 31 at U.S. 211), and between Swift Run Gap (Mile 65 at U.S. 33) and Rockfish Gap (Mile 105 at U.S. 250), will be closed daily between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. The central portion of the Drive, between Thornton Gap and Swift Run Gap, will remain open for overnight access to Skyland Resort and Big Meadows Campground until those facilities close on Nov. 30. Then, beginning Dec. 1, 2008, through Jan. 3, 2008, the entire length of the Skyline Drive will be closed daily from 5 p.m. until 8 a.m.
