It’s nearly been three years since state leaders announced the move of SRI International to locate its East Coast research and development headquarters north of Harrisonburg. Local and state officials marked the formal grand opening of SRI’s new Center for Advanced Drug Research on Monday afternoon.

“Today, we celebrate an important milestone in SRI’s history, as SRI Shenandoah Valley dedicates a beautiful building that holds great promise for important research in infectious disease,” said Curtis Carlson, the president and CEO of SRI.

CADRE, as the SRI Center is known, is focused on developing lifesaving treatments in the areas of infectious and neglected diseases. The 40,000-square-foot R&D building located on U.S. 11 just outside the Harrisonburg city limits has a new protemics laboratory to develop vaccines, diagnostics and therapies to treat dangerous diseases.

“Innovative organizations that support science and develop new commercial opportunities are a critical part of the future success and development of Virginia,” said Gov. Tim Kaine, a key player in the effort to bring SRI to Virginia in 2006.
