Pro surfer, filmmaker to speak at BC

Kyle Theirmann, a 21-year-old professional surfer with a passion to affect change through short films on current issues, will speak on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College.

The program, sponsored by the W. Harold Row Endowed Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.

Combining surfing with producing short films about current issues, Theirmann focuses on the power people have to create a better world through everyday actions. He has surfed his way in Australia, Chili, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru and the U.S.

Theirmann’s first film, “Claim Your Change,” dealt with a proposed coal-fired power plant in Constitución, Chili. Next, he produced “Buy Local, Surf Global,” where he and professional photographer Daniel Russo traveled to Sri Lanka and explored clothing manufacturing companies. His most recent film, “Where is ‘Away’?” shot in Hawaii in early 2011, documents plastic pollution.

Theirmann is pursuing a B.A. in green business from Gaia University. He is supported by sponsors, Patagonia and Sector 9.

His work has been featured inSurfer magazine and The Huffington Post.

Theirmann won the E-chievement Award from The Bohemian Foundation – Coast to Coast Radio and was the 2010 recipient of the Peter Benchley Blue Vision Youth Award.

Theirmann lives in Santa Cruz, Calif.
