Local News: Project to help homeless in Harrisonburg, Monday, 1:45 p.m.

Our Community Works is a new project of Our Community Place and seeks to employ our community’s homeless and marginalized members with the hope of leading them towards meaningful work, sobriety and housing. You can help! We are seeking odd jobs within the Harrisonburg, Rockingham area. With two trained crew leaders we are prepared to do all types of work from painting, landscaping, and weatherizing homes to Small construction, and renovation jobs. We also can conduct energy assessments for home owners interested in saving money and conserving our earths precious resources.

Local Events: Temple to host Holocaust remembrance, Monday, 1:45 p.m.

Dr. Leon Bass will address a public gathering at the Temple House of Israel in Staunton on Tuesday in a talk entitled “I Saw the Walking Dead: A Black Sergeant Remembers Buchenwald.”

The public is invited to the 7 p.m. talk at the Temple House of Israel, 15 N. Market St., Staunton.

Local News: Wellness Fair at EMU, Monday, 10:10 a.m.

A Wellness Fair will be offered to the community on Wednesday, March 18, at Eastern Mennonite University.

The event, entitled “EMU Passport to Wellness,” will run 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the indoor track of EMU’s University Commons and will focus on six areas of well-being: physical, emotional/relational, financial, spiritual, professional/academic and environmental.

Vendors will have displays set up around the track. They include Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Family Life Resource Center, Harrisonburg Police Department, EMU’s Earthkeepers recycling program, EMU pre-professional health society and many others.

Also on tap are free blood pressure screenings, relaxation and yoga demonstrations, sleep/nutrition stretching techniques, raffles and lots of food. The only activities with a fee are cholesterol and glucose screenings for $10.

Upon arrival, persons will receive a “wellness passport” that can be stamped at every location visited.

“Our goal is to have a fun and informative event that identifies available campus and community resources that encourage individuals to be healthy in all aspects of life,” said Margaret C. Upton, director of health services at EMU.

Local News: VDOT road work schedule, Monday, 10:10 a.m.

Here is an updated list of highway work projects that might affect traffic in the Staunton Transportation District during the coming weeks. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

Interstate 64

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Northbound and southbound – Nighttime pothole patching Wednesday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. with mobile lane closures between mile markers 237 to 173.

* (NEW) Exit 195 and Exit 200 – Road lighting installation. Anticipated completion is April 16.

 

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 11 – Sweeping during nighttime hours, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday thru Friday.

* Route 11 – Roadway lighting construction. Shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, flagger traffic control.

* (NEW) Route 60 – Sweeping during nighttime hours, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday thru Friday.

* Route 130 – Bridge construction at Route 501 in Glasgow. Periodic single lane traffic with flagger traffic control, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to noon. Completion is in September 13, 2010.

* (NEW) Route 252 – Brush trimming from Route 802 to Route 262. Weekdays with flagger traffic control.

* Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Guardrail upgrades from Route 276 to Rockingham County line, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Alternating lane closures, flagger and mechanical stop light traffic control.

* (NEW) Route 340 – Alternating lane closures from Route 672 to 1340, with flaggers for stripping and pavement marking of left turn lane.

* Route 340, Waynesboro – Construction from Route 250 to Delphine Avenue for railroad bridge replacement and roadway widening, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Expect minor delays from Broad Street to Sixth Street for construction work. Sixth Street closed for sanitary sewer replacement, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is November, 2011.

Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Detour: Northbound traffic take Route 683 west to Route 687 north to Route 684.

* Route 684, southbound (Little River Road, Craigsville) – Closed to thru traffic for bridge replacement, from Route 683, eastbound and westbound (Wallace Mill Road), to Route 685, northbound and southbound (City Street/Lehigh Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Detour: Southbound traffic take Route 687 south to Route 683 east to Route 684.

* Route 701, westbound (Howardsville Road) – Sewer line work from Route 11 to Route 613. Shoulder closure. Work is 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Flagger traffic control.
