False alarm, or, no, nobody is being laid off

The bad news – at 10 a.m. Friday it appeared that the hard decisions being made at Invista regarding its future in Waynesboro were getting harder, with a Breaking News Update from TheNewsVirginian.com blaring the headline “Invista lays off 250.” The good news came in a followup e-mail sent at 10:32 a.m. “The message sent earlier today was not current and was sent in error. There have been no further layoffs at Invista.”

I’d already begun to assume that based on my attempts to find more information on the layoffs, which included calls to city officials and a scan of the Invista website for a news release and contact information for a press person at the company from whom I could try to get more details.

The reactions of those I was able to track down were similar – “Oh, my God.” “Are you serious?” “Are these new layoffs?”

As the keeper of the AFP’s news-updates alert system, my thinking on this is, There but for the grace of God go I. Because I know at some point down the road I can just as easily make this kind of mistake, and that won’t be a fun day.

I know somebody up the street is pulling some hair out right now.

Invista workers who had to wonder what was going on for 32 minutes this morning, meanwhile, can get back to breathing normally again.

Leave Dianna Russini alone: Sportswriters, coaches, happen to like hot tubs

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
