The Blues Buskers, Kat and Doug and J3 provide holiday music for blues lovers.
On December 15 at 8:00p.m., WTA’s Gateway, 329 W. Main St., Waynesboro, proudly presents: A VERY Mojo Christmas. The monthly blues revue, hosted by bluesman Kevin Chisnell, has joined forces with The Staunton Music Guild and The Central Virginia Blues Society to put together a Christmas show like none other!
The show begins with The Blues Buskers, featuring Matthew Poteat on guitar, mandolin, harmonica, vocals, Byron Grove-Humphries on guitar and vocal, Colin Hester playing bass, Mattie Marsh playing fiddle and Randy Hamblet playing banjo. “It doesn’t sound like a blues line-up, but we love the blues”, says Randy Hamblett.
Also sharing their holiday music will be the jazz-blues stylings of Kat and Doug in their return to the Mojo Saturday Night stage. Kathleen Kraft (vocals) is no stranger to local venues. Since 2005, Kat has performed jazz, blues, swing, folk, country, rock and more as the lead vocalist with her band, kat & the traveler/s.
Doug Hedstrom (guitar/vocals) picked up the guitar at age 13, when his little brother started taking lessons from an old jazz guy; “My brother would come home and I’d get him to show me what he’d learned. It kinda took off from there”. Doug is an inveterate tinkerer and builds his own amplifiers and guitars. Twenty-five years ago, after moving to Virginia, Doug started the band, Bluzonia, which has been his longtime musical project.
Respected singer/songwriter/ blues artists each in their own right, Lisa Miller, Jack Roy and Kevin Chisnell are collectively known as The Juke Joint Junkies. They are also known to frequent the night scenes offering blues to fans all over the region.
Lisa Miller (guitar/vocals) is talented in many musical genres, but has concentrated on the blues for the last decade or so, saying “It suits my low range and it just feels right”. Jack Roy, (guitar/vocals) is the consummate blues artist and enthusiast. “If you listen to the old African American gospel music, you can hear where the blues, R&B, soul and rock come from. It’s very spiritual music”.
Host Kevin Chisnell (harmonica/vocals) has been a big fan of the blues for a several decades. “I think, on a very prime level, the blues reaches us at the core of our being. Its melodies and messages aren’t fancy or complicated… the blues is life”.
Combine that blues music with the seasonal atmosphere and you have a unique and delightful evening to get your mojo workin’!!
