The Waynesboro Police Department is investigating an overnight citywide crime spree involving a burglary at a church, vandalisms and theft at a construction site.
At 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, officers took reports at residences in the 2300 and 2400 blocks of Cortland Street and the 1100 block of Lyndhurst Road that had had picture windows shot with marbles. In addition, two vehicles from the 500 block of Maple Avenue and the 1400 block of Madison Street had windows shot out with unknown projectiles, possibly marbles. The damage on all five vandalisms is estimated at $2,800.
Just after midnight on Monday, Aug. 12, officers responded to Waynesboro Mennonite Church, 1801 Monroe St., after a nearby resident noticed activity around the building. When officers arrived, they found a glass door on the east side of the building had been shattered. The inside of church had blood smeared on the walls, floor, doors and desks of the office and hallway. The assailants also stole a computer. The damage from the burglary is estimated at $700.
At 8 a.m. Monday, officers responded to the construction site of the CVS Pharmacy at 1235 W. Broad St. for a report of a theft of scrap metal. P&S Electric, one of the subcontractors, indicated that approximately $3000 was taken sometime over the weekend.
Officers recovered evidence in many of the incidents which will be sent off for analysis. The Police Department is asking citizens to be on the lookout for anyone who has recently sustained an injury, e.g. serious laceration.
