What caused the Rocks Mountain fire?

Shenandoah National Park personnel have determined that the cause of the Rocks Mountain Fire was an illegal campfire. The fire, which was reported to the park at approximately 3:10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, had burned approximately 450 acres inside Shenandoah National Park.

Before the fire reached containment lines, rain, sleet and snow fell on the Rocks Mountain Fire late Sunday and much of Monday. Fire managers will continue to monitor the fire and, when the snow melts, firefighters will patrol the area for hot spots.

VDOT: The snow has stopped, but road crews hard at work

The snow has stopped in the Shenandoah Valley but Virginia Department of Transportation crews are still at it, clearing and treating roads throughout the region. Travel is still not advised in the area since a layer of ice is still on many roadways.

VDOT: Travel not advised on Monday

VDOT crews will be monitoring and treating roadways during the night and into Monday and Tuesday. They will work 12-hour shifts, 24-hours a day with the goal of making at least one pass on all roads within 48 hours after the storm ends.
