#4 FSU rallies late again, completes sweep of UVa.

No. 4 Florida State scored three runs in the eighth inning to come from behind and defeat the Virginia baseball team, 7-5, Monday evening at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla.

In the first ACC Monday broadcast on ESPNU, the Seminoles finished off a three-game series sweep, rallying in the eighth inning for wins in the final two games.

Reed Gragnani (Jr., Richmond, Va.) tied a career high with four hits for Virginia (11-8-1, 2-4 ACC), while Mitchell Shifflett (So., Midlothian, Va.) added a pair of hits. Read more

Three-run eighth lifts #6 FSU over UVa.

No. 6 Florida State scored three runs in the eighth inning to erase a 3-1 deficit and earn a 4-3 win over the Virginia baseball team Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. Stephen McGee’s RBI groundout proved to be the difference for FSU, which clinched a series victory over UVa for the first time since 2008.

Kyle Crockett (So., Poquoson, Va.) allowed three runs in the eighth inning and took the loss. Crockett (0-1) struck out three straight batters before walking a batter and hitting another before giving up a bloop single to James Ramsey to load the bases in the eighth. before Justin Thompson (Sr., Radford, Va.) came on in relief. #6 Florida State pounds UVa. baseball, 12-3

The Virginia baseball team dropped the first game of a three-game series to No. 6 Florida State, 12-3, Saturday night (March 17) at Dick Howser Stadium. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 11-6-1 and 2-2 in ACC play, while the Seminoles improved to 15-2 and 4-0 in conference action.

Cavalier starter Scott Silverstein (Sr., Olney, Md.) (1-2) lasted four and a third innings, allowing five runs (one earned), five hits and he struck out four. Shane Halley (Sr., Burke, Va.) allowed one run in an inning of work, while Austin Young (So., Mechanicsville, Va.) gave up three runs in an inning and two-thirds. Scott voted first-team All-ACC

Virginia senior forward Mike Scott (Chesapeake, Va.) is a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection for the 2011-12 season and UVa junior guard Jontel Evans (Hampton, Va.) is a member of the ACC’s All-Defensive Team.

Members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA) selected the teams that were announced on Monday (March 5).

Scott, who finished second in the balloting, is the first Virginia player to earn first-team All-ACC honors since Sean Singletary in 2008.  Read more

Dagger? #22 FSU stuns UVa. in final second

Ian Miller’s fifth three-pointer of the game broke a tie and pushed #22 Florida State to an improbable 63-60 win at Virginia Thursday night.

The loss was the second in a row at home and the fourth in seven games overall for UVa., which has gone from NCAA Tournament rock to the bubble with the late-season skid.

The ‘Hoos need a win on Sunday at Maryland in their regular-season finale and likely at least one win in next week’s ACC Tournament to finalize their NCAA resume. Read more

UVa. women knock off Florida State

In the regular-season finale for both teams, Virginia defeated Florida State, 66-57. Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) scored 23 points to lead four Cavaliers that scored in double figures.

With the win, Virginia improved to 21-9 overall and finished the regular-season with a 9-7 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference action. Florida State’s record dropped to 14-16 overall and 6-10 in league play. Read more

ACC-leading Florida State nips #16 UVa.

A 14-0 run gave Virginia a one-point lead late, but a long three by Michael Snaer gave Florida State the cushion it needed in a 58-55 win on Saturday in Tallahassee.

#16 UVa. (18-4, 5-3 ACC) had two chances in the final minute to tie it, but Joe Harris and Sammy Zeglinski missed three-pointers. A Malcolm Brogdon three with 2.7 seconds left brought the Cavs back within three, and then Snaer missed the front end of a one-and-one.

Mike Scott rebounded the miss, but Virginia was not able to get a shot off at the end. Read more
